PESO

PESO is active in both academic and social fronts. The 2005-06 academic year was very fruitful for PESO as new projects were proposed and implemented. The activities carried out in 2005-06 are outlined below.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES IN 2005-06

  1. SPE technical meetings: PESO promoted attendance in SPE technical meetings and plant tours by announcing these events and partially reimbursing attending students.
  2. Graduate Student Resume Book: PESO published the first Department of Polymer Engineering Resume Book on October 27, 2005. The resume book, in which 20 students were featured, was distributed to company executives on October 27-28, 2005
  3. Plant tour: The facilities of the injection molder SARE Plastics in Alliance, OH were toured by students on November 2, 2005
  4. Western Coatings Symposium: PESO sponsored 2 presenters for this conference on November 6-9, 2005.
  5. Career Building Seminar: Dr. Jim Scobbo, from GE Plastics gave a talk on career paths, interviews and resumes on November 28, 2005 morning to about 20 students.
  6. Career Building Seminar: Dr. Chris Zook, from Hoover, talked on effective job searches and responsibilities of PhD graduates in industry on March 23, 2006 evening.
  7. American Physical Society Conference: PESO sponsored 3 students for the APS Conference in Baltimore, MD on March 13-March 17, 2006
  8. Laying foundations for a polymer education festival: PESO proposed the first “Plastics Awareness Day” to be organized in Fall 2006 and was granted the CHASE Award. Read more about it in the Awards section.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES IN 2005-06

  1. Movie Nights: PESO organized biweekly movie nights throughout the school year. Students voted for the movies they wanted to see and refreshments were provided.
  2. Welcome Picnic: PESO organized the welcome picnic for the department on August 25, 2005 in the Monroe Falls Metro Park in Akron. New students socialized with other students, faculty and staff by cooking and eating together, playing games and swimming. Attendance was around 90 people.
  3. Paintball: PESO organized a joint paintball event with PSSO (Polymer Science Student Organization) on October 8, 2005 in the Total Paintball Addicts field in Alliance, OH. About 20 PESO members attended.
  4. Fall Bowling Night: The bowling night was held on November 17, 2005 evening in the game room of the Student Union. 80 students, faculty and staff attended and socialized over pizza and bowling.
  5. Intramural Basketball League: 9 players represented the Polymer Engineering Team on November 28-December 1, 2005
  6. Christmas Party: 110 students, faculty, staff and their families attended the Christmas Party organized on December 15, 2005 evening in the Student Union ballroom. The banquet was followed by a gift exchange and the surprise appearance of Santa Claus. Guests enjoyed with listening to department members play the piano and sing karaoke.
  7. Ice Skating: PESO organized an ice skating event in the Lock 3 Ice Rink in Downtown Akron on January 28, 2006. Participants in this event included many of our professors in addition to students, and the total participation reached 30.
  8. Spring Bowling & Pool Night: PESO booked the whole student union game room for the enjoyment of students on March 15, 2006 evening. Around 50 students socialized over pizza and soft drinks.
