The University of Akron as lead institution under the direction of principal investigator, Dr. Miko Cakmak, was awarded three year $8 million from The Third Ohio Frontier Project for "Functional Polyimides and High Performance Nanocomposites." This initiative integrates efforts of the three academic institutions Kent State University and University of Dayton as well as 14 different companies to produce high value added products. These include optical films for next generation LCD displays, high strength films for High Altitude Airships, photovoltaic films, thermal management films for electronic devices as well as ultraperformance 3D polyimide nanocomposite parts for jet engines.
Additional two $8 million each awads to Kent Displays and Graftech through the same State initiative will result in an additional $200,000 and $360,000 respectively for The University of Akron as sub-contractor with Dr. Miko Cakmak as UA site director.
